Watching my kids enjoy their grandparents this weekend made me reflect on what a great privilege they have. Very few American kids living in Nairobi get to see their grandparents this regularly. Having Christi’s parents across town is a huge blessing. After a career physicist at American Optical in Massachusetts, Christi’s dad took an early retirement and is now the Dean of Sciences at Daystar University near Nairobi. Christi’s mom runs a home for former street boys and does library automation on the side. They preceded us to Nairobi by about seven years.
My parents normally live in Malawi, which is only a few hours away by plane, so at least we’ve gotten to see them once or twice a year. I only ever saw my grandparents about one year out of five for a couple of weeks at a time at most.
