A more optimistic outlook

The mass rallies originally called by the opposition were called off.


I went to hear the US Ambassador give a briefing for American citizens this morning. It was all “off-the-record.” I don’t know that that means for non-journalists like me, but I assume that means he doesn’t want to be quoted, so I will just some of my general impressions.

He sounded fairly optimistic that a deal would be reached. He felt like they were very close, despite how the media has been depicting the situation. Public and private statements positions are often very different, and the important statements are the private ones. US Secretary of State Rice is in contact with both sides, and both sides want the see the country stay together.
